When I learned that the ‘Super El Nino’ could trigger extreme weather conditions across various countries over the next six to nine months—potentially becoming one of the most powerful events of its kind in recent decades—I, too, became concerned. El Niño is essentially a natural climate phenomenon linked to abnormal fluctuations in sea-surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. While its impact is not uniform across all nations, the fact that Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change means that such significant weather shifts could affect our lives.

I believe that the most significant changes in Bangladesh due to the 'Super El Niño' are likely to occur in temperature, rainfall patterns, and agricultural systems. At times, temperatures may feel higher than normal. Prolonged periods of low rainfall could dry out the soil and increase the demand for water in agriculture. Conversely, sudden, excessive rainfall at other times could lead to issues such as waterlogging and flooding. In essence, the disruption of normal weather patterns poses a major challenge for us.
Its impact on Bangladesh's agricultural sector is particularly significant. A large number of people in our country are involved in agriculture, either directly or indirectly. Excessive temperatures, irregular rainfall, or prolonged dry spells can affect crop production. The need for irrigation may increase for the cultivation of rice, vegetables, and various seasonal crops. As I am personally involved in farming and fish cultivation, I believe that farmers and fish farmers need to remain alert in advance regarding changes in the weather.
Our urban areas could also be affected. Excessive heat will drive up the demand for electricity, particularly due to the use of fans and air conditioners. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall leading to waterlogging on the roads could cause traffic congestion and disrupt movement. The daily commutes of working people may also be impacted. In densely populated cities like Dhaka, extreme heat and waterlogging could cause additional hardship for residents.
However, I believe that instead of panicking, we should take some practical preparations in advance. First, I will regularly monitor weather forecasts. I will try to stay informed about warnings regarding storms, heavy rainfall, heatwaves, or floods from reliable sources, such as the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. I will also explain the importance of these warnings to all my family members.
We will keep food, purified water, essential medicines, a flashlight, a power bank, and first-aid supplies ready at home for emergencies. We will make it a habit to keep mobile phones and other necessary devices charged. During periods of extreme heat, we will ensure we drink plenty of water, avoid going outdoors unnecessarily, and pay special attention to children and the elderly.
In addition to looking after our families, we must also be mindful of the environment around our homes. Before the rains arrive, it is advisable to clear drains and water drainage channels, tend to essential plants and agricultural land, and take precautions against excess water entering fish ponds. It is also wise to decide in advance where family members will take shelter safely during an emergency.
Ultimately, I believe it is more realistic to view a "Super El Niño" as a potential weather-related risk rather than assuming it will single-handedly bring disaster to a country. With accurate information, awareness, and advance preparation, it is possible to significantly mitigate the damage. We have no control over nature, but the decision regarding how prepared we are for a disaster rests with us. Therefore, my family and I will remain vigilant rather than panicked and will strive to adapt to the situation as needed.

El super niño causa efectos tanto a nivel de sequías, como a nivel de inundaciones y lluvias torrenciales, eso impacta de lleno en los sistemas agrícolas, muchas personas pueden perder parte de sus cosechas, lo que hace que algunos rubros agrícolas aumenten de precio en el mercado.
