Among the domestic animals around us, the antics and innocent expressions of cats are always a source of great delight. In particular, when a cat’s eyes widen into perfect, round orbs—whether upon encountering an unfamiliar object or suddenly glancing toward a door—that bewildered yet adorable look is enough to brighten anyone’s mood. On the internet, wide-eyed cats—like those seen in Simon’s Cat or various other humorous cartoon strips—have a dedicated following; their expressive faces have a way of instantly melting away the fatigue of our daily lives.

This artwork was inspired by my desire to capture one such curious, wide-eyed cat on my own canvas. I envisioned a grey cat, frozen in place after spotting something unexpected, its large, unblinking eyes fixed in a gaze of pure surprise. My primary goal was to bring out the cat’s innocent charm by blending shades of grey and white against a blue background.

Step 1

In the first step, I used a pencil to draw circular and straight guidelines to establish the proportions for the character—ensuring the right size for the eyes, balance for the face, and correct placement for the ears. This served as a rough sketch, outlining the two oversized eyes, pyramid-shaped ears, a small nose, and whiskers.

Step 2

In the second step, I erased the initial, messy guidelines and refined the sketch with clean, clear outlines. I added the pupils—small, black dots at the center of each eye—an inverted ‘Y’-shaped mouth beneath the nose, three whiskers on each side (six in total), and defined the contours of the cat’s chest.

Step 3

In the third step, the final line art is created over the pencil drawing using a dark, bold ink brush. By ensuring every outline is precise and bold, the cat’s large eyes, delicate whiskers, and facial features stand out strikingly in this black-and-white composition.

Step 4

In the fourth step, a vibrant royal blue is applied to the canvas background. Simultaneously, the base flat-coloring process begins: a light grey is used for the cat’s body, a white patch is added to its chest, and the pupils are filled with a bright, stark white.

Step 5

In the final, fifth step, a refined shade of classic grey is applied to the cat’s body to achieve the perfect tone. By balancing the crisp white of the chest, the large, bright eyes, and the blue background, the artwork of this wide-eyed, charming cat is successfully completed. Today's discussion concludes here.
