After returning home following an absence of nearly four months, I found the houseāwhich I had left reasonably cleanāin a state where... everything needed cleaning.
Itās quite a mystery.
You leave it clean, youāre away for months, and then you come back to find the place full of cobwebs and dead insects; Iām no clean freak, but a basic level of cleanliness is essentialāthough I realize that living in the foothills comes with this sort of thing.
I got back on Saturday, and on Sunday morning I went to pick up Birilloāmy 11-and-a-half-year-old diabetic Beagle. The person who has looked after him whenever Iām away for the past five years always returns him to me in excellent shape, health issues notwithstanding.
Heāll be staying with me until November 8th, the day before I leave again.
Today Iām getting back to the gym, andāmost importantly, after three and a half months of eating outāIām returning to treating my stomach to proper, regular meals.
Naturally, upon returning, thereās no shortage of things to do to get back to normal.
Yesterday involved Birillo, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, a short run in the afternoon, watching athletics and volleyball on TV, and plenty of other tasksāincluding jotting down these lines.
Of course, now that Iām back, Iāve also started thinking about my next trip; there are just over 50 days leftānot exactly imminent, but not too far off either.
When you get home, itās natural to start thinking about your next adventures; while I was working the season, the "future" was simply the evening show for that specific night, but once you return to normal life, you start making longer-term plans again. Iāve already got my ticket, Viazul booking, and visa details ready to enter into the D'Viajero system; Iām still missing travel insurance, though, and I need to figure out how to get to Turin on November 9th, since my taxi-driver friend isn't available at that ungodly hourāheās already got a long-planned work trip scheduled.
I think Iāll drive down to somewhere near the venue where weāre playing in Turin, leave the car in a safe spot, and then take a city bus to Porta Susa, where Iāll catch the shuttle to Malpensa.
Iām starting to think about what to packāor rather, what will fit into that 10kg carry-on allowance plus, say, another 2 or 3kg in a separate travel bag; it doesn't sound like much, but you can actually cram a lot of stuff into 13kg.
The informal exchange rate is over 785 CUP to the dollar, so my spending budget is pretty healthyāthough I like to spend money wisely, not just throw it out the window.
Departure isn't exactly imminent, but itās not that far off either; as a seasoned traveler, I like to plan things well in advance. I used to travel haphazardly when I was twenty, but nowāconsidering we're talking about a 9,000km journeyāitās best to leave as little as possible to chance.
Anyway, just being back home is the first step toward the next trip.
