RE: Inktober 2026: 08/10: Stinky

Yes, that was precisely the idea behind my drawing and post: it’s not the birds, rabbits, or even pigs themselves that are the issue, but the facility where they are kept—specifically, the failure to maintain proper cleanliness.

To be honest, this is the first time I’ve heard of using fabric as bedding for poultry; I know that disposable pads are used in brooders during the early stages of a chick's life, but that’s about it.

Considering the sheer volume of droppings produced by laying hens—and especially by broilers—I find it hard to imagine managing a coop that relies on replacing fabric bedding.

Common practices involve using straw or sawdust bedding that fosters anaerobic bacteria (though it requires frequent turning) or keeping birds in cages, which allows for the quick removal of droppings from the trays.

Every venture has specific goals; if the aim is to turn a profit from poultry farming rather than just keeping birds for pleasure, one has to ask: how cost-effective is fabric bedding, and is it actually possible to clean it well enough for reuse?
