🇺🇸🇩🇰🇬🇱 WHAT’S REALLY IN TRUMP’S DEFENSE PACT WITH DENMARK AND GREENLAND?

A major new development is reshaping the security picture in the Arctic.

On September 22, 2026, the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed a new defense agreement aimed at strengthening security in Greenland and the wider Arctic and North Atlantic region.
🇺🇸 Expanded U.S. military presence
The agreement allows the United States to modernize and expand activities at Pituffik Space Base and establish additional defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It also provides a framework for additional defense areas in the future.

✈️ Greater military access
U.S. forces receive broad rights for military access, movement, aircraft overflight and naval activity in Greenland, subject to the agreement's provisions.

🌍 NATO and Arctic security
The agreement calls for stronger NATO engagement in the Arctic, including planning, military presence, exercises and intelligence cooperation.

🇩🇰 Greenland remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark
The Danish government says the agreement respects Denmark's sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.

♾️ No fixed end date
The agreement does not have an end date and can only be amended by mutual consent. It also contains provisions addressing a possible future Greenlandic independence while requiring continued NATO membership under the agreement.

Why does Greenland matter?

Greenland's location makes it strategically important for the Arctic, North Atlantic and North American defense system. The agreement reflects growing attention to security, military infrastructure and geopolitical competition in the Arctic.

The key point is that this is not an agreement transferring Greenland's sovereignty to the United States. Instead, it significantly expands the framework for U.S. military access and defense activities while formally recognizing Denmark's territorial sovereignty and Greenland's right to self-determination.
