The Scarlet Dragonfly—scientifically known as Crocothemis erythraea or its Asian variant, the Scarlet Skimmer (Crocothemis servilia)—is a magnificent and beautiful member of the Libellulidae family. Its brilliant, deep red color catches the eye from a distance. This species is primarily found in Asia, Africa, and parts of Southern Europe; in India, too, it is frequently spotted near various water bodies. The male Scarlet Dragonfly has a deep red body and head, and sometimes a faint, thin black line is visible along the center of its abdomen. In contrast, females and younger dragonflies are typically yellowish-brown or golden, which helps them blend into their natural surroundings. Their bodies are perfectly adapted for flight; they possess large compound eyes that allow them to spot prey from every direction.
They have two pairs of strong, transparent wings, often featuring light orange or amber-colored patches at their base. They display remarkable agility in the air—capable of stopping instantly, flying backwards, and diving. Scarlet Dragonflies generally inhabit areas near still or flowing freshwater sources, such as ponds, lakes, paddy fields, and slow-moving streams. They are skilled hunters, feeding primarily on small flying insects like mosquitoes, flies, and moths. They are highly beneficial to agriculture and the ecosystem, as they naturally help control mosquito populations and play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance. Water pollution and climate change are impacting their natural habitats, increasing the need for their conservation. This magnificent insect stands as a unique symbol of nature's beauty and diversity.
