Rotting of young gourd shoots
Rotting of young gourd shoots is a very common but frustrating problem among farmers. Even if there are a lot of shoots on the plant, many times they turn yellow and black and dry out before they grow. The young shoots shown in the picture are victims of such a problem, where rot has started from the base or tip.
If the female flower is not pollinated properly, the shoots rot and fall off. Flies pierce the young shoots and lay eggs, which causes rot inside. Due to excess moisture or rain, the young shoots are damaged by fungal attacks. Even if there is a lack of sufficient calcium and necessary nutrients in the soil, the shoots do not grow.
To solve this problem, artificial or hand pollination can be done in the morning. Using pheromone traps or poison baits is effective in controlling flies. In addition, it is possible to protect the young shoots by applying balanced fertilizer, not allowing water to accumulate at the base of the plant, and spraying organic fungicides if necessary. Proper care can prevent this rot and ensure good yields.
