RE: How Technology Can Connect Millions of People Yet Still Make Us Feel Isolated

in #life • 2 days ago

We rarely cling to unused objects merely for their physical utility; we keep them because they anchor identity, memory, and emotional security. Unnecessary items often represent past versions of ourselves or unrealized future aspirations—the unread books of an imagined intellectual or the gear of an abandoned hobby. Discarding these possessions feels like confronting lost time, admitting failure, or severing ties with who we once were. Additionally, the psychological loss aversion bias causes us to overvalue items simply because we own them. We hoard unused physical objects to protect our psychological history and preserve potential future identities from permanent erasure.

We do not hold onto things because they take up space in our rooms, but because they occupy space in our souls.

Ultimately, clearing physical clutter is an act of emotional acceptance. Letting go of objects allows us to honor who we are today.
