Nobody Warned Me That University Would Change Me
Nobody warned me that university would change me.
I thought I was going there to get a degree.
Attend lectures. Write exams. Make friends. Graduate.
Simple, right?
Well… not exactly.
University has a funny way of introducing you to different versions of yourself.
The version that thought she had everything figured out.
The version that suddenly had to make decisions without someone telling her what to do.
The version that discovered that having a degree and being prepared for life are two completely different things.
I’ve learned that independence isn't just about having money.
Sometimes, it's being able to think for yourself.
Sometimes, it's learning a skill because you realise you can't wait for someone else to save you.
Sometimes, it's learning how to say no.
And sometimes, it's accepting that the person you entered university as may not be the person who leaves it.
I'm still figuring out who I'm becoming.
But when I look back, I realise university has taught me far more outside the classroom than I ever expected.
Maybe that's the real university experience.
Not just getting a degree.
But becoming someone who can actually do something with it.
And perhaps that's a story worth telling.
