Jesus and Nicodemus: All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. John 3:20

The encounter of Jesus with Nicodemus is recounted only in the Gospel of John. This mysterious meeting took place at night, likely because Nicodemus—being a Pharisee—did not want to be known as a disciple of Jesus, given his social standing. And Jesus revealed to Nicodemus important spiritual mysteries, such as rebirth from above and perceiving the Kingdom of God, the empire or government of the divine perfections, with the mind.
Nicodemus, a master of the law, was perplexed by these spiritual teachings, even though he understood that Jesus had come to teach by divine will. Nicodemus, although he believed in Jesus, was fundamentally a carnal man and not a spiritual man. This was the reason why he did not understand the mysteries of the Kingdom.
And so, after explaining the second birth to Nicodemus—not of the flesh but of the Spirit—Jesus instructed him on the nature of His spiritual mission: "God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him" John 3:17. With this, Jesus explained to Nicodemus that He had come to announce a spiritual change—salvation through the gift of faith and the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, based on His word.
But Jesus also told Nicodemus that, faced with this announcement, people have the freedom to choose. For sin and righteousness are paths set before human reason. And Jesus, as the embodiment of light, came to offer the spiritual gift of eternal life—a new spiritual life that calls to those who practice the truth, but is rejected by sinners; that is why Jesus said to Nicodemus: "All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed" John 3:20.
With these words, as recounted in the Gospel of John, Jesus concluded his encounter with Nicodemus. Ultimately, Jesus invited Nicodemus to make a choice, for light and darkness, salvation and perdition, are choices that must be made before God.
