A New Memorial in Amsterdam Helps Us Remember 282 People
Imagine going to university, making friends, and dreaming about your future. Then a war begins, and everything changes.
This happened to many people at the University of Amsterdam during the Second World War. Now, a new memorial helps us remember 282 students and workers who died during those terrible years.
The memorial was unveiled on September 30, 2026. It stands in the courtyard of the Oudemanhuispoort, a historic university building in Amsterdam.
Why Are Their Names Important?
The memorial carries the names of 254 students and 28 staff members.
But these are more than names on a monument. Each person had a life. They had families, friendships, favourite things, and hopes for tomorrow.
Seeing their names helps us understand that war hurts real people. A large number can be hard to imagine. A name reminds us of someone who once walked through the same city streets.
The memorial also remembers people whose names are still unknown.
What Happened During the War?
Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940.
Jewish people were treated cruelly and unfairly because they were Jewish. Many were taken away and murdered.
Most of the university victims were murdered because they were Jewish, because they helped fight against Nazi rule, or both. Others died because of bombs, sickness, exhaustion, or other causes.
People who secretly opposed the Nazis were part of the resistance. Helping others could put their own lives in danger.
Putting Something Wrong Right
During the war, Jewish university workers and some workers involved in resistance lost their jobs under orders from the German occupiers.
The university has now formally cancelled those unfair dismissals.
This cannot bring anyone back. But it officially recognises that what happened to them was wrong.
A Quiet Place to Remember
The courtyard is open to the public. Visitors can stop, read the names, and think about the people behind them.
