Initially, during the 19th century, these plants were considered part of the 'Heliantheae' group. However, towards the end of the 20th century, molecular and DNA studies revealed that they constitute a distinct and unique group. Consequently, it was recognized as an independent tribe, 'Coreopsideae'. A key characteristic of this group is the presence of anthochlor pigments; these chemical compounds give the flowers their brilliant yellow hue. Additionally, the fruits (cypselas) of these plants are flattened in shape and often contain a red resin.
According to the Global Compositae Database (2025), this group currently comprises approximately 27 genera. Among the most well-known is Bidens—often referred to as 'beggarticks'—which is known for its sticky seeds. Another notable example is the Cosmos; it is the national flower of Mexico and a favorite among gardening enthusiasts due to its diverse shapes and colors.
Significance and Uses
These plants are ecologically important as they attract butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. In landscaping, they are used for edging and mass planting. Many Coreopsideae species are not only ornamental but also capable of surviving in harsh climatic conditions.
