NordVPN DNS Not Resolving: I Tested It — It Wasn't DNS at All
I connected to NordVPN on my phone. The app showed a Miami server, a new IP address and the word “Secured”. Then no website would open.
This is the classic “NordVPN DNS not resolving” problem. The tunnel is up, but the phone cannot turn website names into addresses. Here is how I worked through it.
First, check that the connection itself is fine
If the app shows a server and a new IP, the VPN is working. Don’t reinstall yet.
Check the DNS setting
In the app, open Settings and go to DNS. Unless you set a custom DNS on purpose, leave it on Default. A custom DNS that doesn’t match the VPN is a very common cause. I wrote about that separately here: NordVPN custom DNS not working.
Test two sites, not one
I opened a neutral page (1.1.1.1) first and it loaded. That told me the internet and DNS were fine through the VPN. The site I really wanted failed with a “connection reset” error, which is not a DNS error at all.
So if one site fails and a neutral site works, the cause is usually that site blocking VPN traffic or the mobile network, not NordVPN.
If nothing loads by name, try this in order
Switch to another server.
Set DNS back to Default.
Turn Threat Protection off for a minute.
Clear the app cache.
Restart the phone or toggle Airplane Mode.
Reinstall the app as the last step.
If the app won’t connect at all, that is a different problem. See NordVPN stuck on connecting.
Don’t forget to check for leaks
Once DNS works, it is worth knowing which DNS server your phone is really using. I ran a real test and wrote down what I saw: my NordVPN DNS leak test.
I put the full steps with screenshots in one place: NordVPN DNS not resolving fix.
