The Night We Wear Our Masks

Every year, we carve faces into pumpkins.

Some look funny.

Some look terrifying.

Some smile.

Some seem to hide secrets behind their glowing eyes.

Yet I've always wondered if Halloween was never really about the pumpkins.

Maybe it was always about us.

Looking at these lanterns in the darkness, I can't help but think about the masks people wear every day.

Not the ones made of plastic or painted for a single night.

The invisible ones.

The smile that hides exhaustion.

The confidence that hides fear.

The laughter that hides loneliness.

The words "I'm fine" that often mean the exact opposite.

In a strange way, these pumpkins are more honest than we are.

Their cracks are visible.

Their imperfections are part of their beauty.

They make no attempt to hide what they are.

And perhaps that is why they glow so brightly.

We spend so much of our lives trying to appear strong.

Trying to look successful.

Trying to convince the world that everything is under control.

But the truth is that every person carries shadows inside.

Regrets.

Mistakes.

Dreams that never happened.

Conversations that ended too soon.

People who left and never came back.

The older I get, the more I realize that strength is not the absence of darkness.

Strength is learning how to carry your own darkness without letting it extinguish your light.

Just like these pumpkins.

Hollowed by time.

Marked by imperfections.

Yet still glowing against the night.

Maybe that is why this scene feels oddly comforting.

It reminds me that we are all a little broken.

A little scarred.

A little imperfect.

And somehow, despite everything, we continue to shine.

The real question is not whether we have darkness inside us.

The real question is what we choose to illuminate with the light that remains.

Because in the end, people rarely remember our perfect moments.

They remember the warmth we shared when the world around us felt cold.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about light is that it only becomes visible when darkness arrives.
