The Sea Took Away One Memory and Gave Me Another
The Sea Took Away One Memory and Gave Me Another
There are places we photograph.
And there are places that somehow photograph us.
This view reminds me of one of those places.
I stood on the shore, looking at the water.
Perfectly calm.
So calm that it was hard to believe how many stories might be hidden beneath its surface.
The sea has always reminded me of life.
From a distance, everything looks simple.
Beautiful colors.
A quiet horizon.
A gentle breeze.
Everything seems clear and predictable.
Only when you move closer do you begin to notice the depth.
Years ago, I met an elderly man sitting on rocks very much like these.
For a long time, he simply stared at the horizon.
No phone.
No book.
No distractions.
Just silence.
Eventually, I asked if he came there often.
He smiled and replied:
"Only when I want to talk to someone who is no longer here."
At first, I didn't understand.
A few moments later, he told me about his wife.
For more than forty years, they had spent part of every summer by the sea.
This place was theirs.
Their favorite corner of the world.
After she passed away, he continued to return.
Not because he believed he would see her again.
But because memories have addresses.
When we look at places like this, we often think about vacations.
I think about time.
Because time behaves exactly like the sea.
You cannot stop it.
You cannot turn it back.
You cannot ask it to wait.
You can only stand on the shore and watch it move.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that happiness will arrive when we buy something new.
When we earn more money.
When we achieve the next goal.
Then a view like this appears before us.
Turquoise water.
A few rocks.
An endless horizon.
And suddenly we realize that life requires far less than we imagined.
The most beautiful thing about memories is that they don't care about money.
They don't care about job titles.
Or expensive cars.
Years later, we remember completely different things.
The smell of salty air.
The warmth of sunlit stones.
The voice of someone we loved.
A quiet conversation.
A moment when everything felt right.
As I was leaving, I turned around one last time.
The sea looked exactly the same.
Calm.
Timeless.
Unmoved.
And at that moment, I understood why people can spend hours staring at the horizon.
It gives us hope.
It reminds us that no matter what lies behind us, there is always another stretch of water ahead.
Another sunrise.
Another chapter.
Another chance to begin again.
