The morning sun cast long, distorted shadows across the stone-paved bed of the dry stream. To the casual passerby, it was simply a municipal park feature awaiting the seasonal turn of the water pumps. But those who lived near the park knew the truth: the creek bed didn't lack water because of drought or maintenance. It was dry because the water had fled.

It had started three autumns ago. At precisely nine in the morning, the trickling stream began to murmur—not with the standard splash of fresh current, but with voices. Low, overlapping whispers rose from the smooth stones lining the banks. Those standing nearby reported hearing fragments of forgotten conversations, lost promises, and names long unspoken.

By the end of that week, the water simply vanished overnight, leaving behind a sun-baked channel of cobbles and jagged grey rock. Yet, every morning when the sun reached the leaves of the towering trees above, the shadows of the stones refused to align with the light.

If you step down onto the stone path today, you will notice the strange silence. Birds do not land on the wooden fences, and the air inside the stone trench feels unnaturally chill. Local legends say that if you walk along the dry stream toward the small wooden bridge in the distance, your shadow will slow down, lingering behind on the rocks. And if you stop to listen closely to the drain covers along the path, you can still hear the lost water flowing underneath, whispering the secrets it gathered before it ran away into the earth.
