Confessions of a Man Who Couldn't Pick Up the Scissors
My pothos reached the ceiling.
More precisely: the vine climbed off the shelf, ran up the wall, wrapped itself around the curtain rail, and annexed the spot where the air conditioner remote lives. Every time I wanted to change the temperature, I had to push leaves aside. It was a jungle. In a one-bedroom apartment.
"It's time to cut it back."
I thought that in March. I picked up the scissors in June.
I was scared. It had grown so far. Cutting it felt wasteful. What if it died? While I deliberated, the vine reached the balcony door. The plant had more decisiveness than I did.
- Is a fast-growing plant a healthy plant?
Let's clear up a common misreading.
Long, vigorous growth looks like proof of health. I certainly read it that way: growing means thriving, right?
Half true. When a houseplant stretches out thin and pale indoors, it's very often not thriving — it's searching . That's etiolation. A plant that isn't getting enough light elongates its stems toward the light. That's not growth; that's an expedition. My pothos climbed the wall because it was desperately reaching for the window.
So an absurdly long vine can be less a badge of health and more a note saying "conditions are a little short." What it needs is better light, plus a tidy-up of whatever already stretched too far.
And not cutting has its own costs. An overgrown vine unbalances the whole plant. More leaves means more water and more nutrients demanded, while the root system stays exactly the same size. Something has to give, and it gives at the bottom: the lower leaves yellow and drop, leaving a long bare stem with foliage only at the far end.
Gardeners call that lower-leaf drop. The plant is abandoning its oldest leaves to feed the tip. My kindness — my refusal to cut — was making the plant ugly. This is not the first time my kindness has been the problem.
- Apical dominance, or: the tiny dictator at the top
So why does cutting make a plant fuller?
The key is something called apical dominance.
The tip of a stem — the apical bud — produces large amounts of a plant hormone called auxin. One of auxin's jobs is to suppress the lateral buds further down the stem. While the tip is growing strongly, the side buds are told to wait their turn.
It's rational, from the plant's point of view. Reaching above your neighbours for light beats spreading sideways. Concentrate resources at the top; the sides can wait. A tidy little autocracy.
Now cut the tip off. The auxin supply disappears, and the waiting side buds all start growing at once. One vine becomes two, three, four shoots. That's what pinching and cutting back actually does.
Cutting doesn't reduce a plant. It triggers division. Sacrifice one stem, multiply the whole. Like an orchestra that starts improvising the moment the conductor leaves the podium.
Once I understood that, the scissors stopped being frightening. Cut = divide, not cut = subtract. One word changes everything.
- Where to cut: find the node
There's a clear right answer.
Stems have nodes — the slightly swollen points where leaves attach, and where aerial roots emerge. New growth comes from nodes. The smooth stretch between them is the internode.
Cut just above a node. Three to five millimetres above is the rule of thumb. Cut immediately below a node and that node dries out. Cut in the middle of an internode and you leave a stub of bare stem above the cut, with no node on it, so nothing will ever grow from it — just a few centimetres of pointless stick.
So the job is: choose the node you want to keep, cut a few millimetres above it. And keep the piece you cut off. That part matters later.
Two small practicalities. Disinfect the blades first — alcohol on a tissue is enough. A cut on a plant is a wound, and a dirty blade is how infections get in. And cut in the growing season, roughly spring to early summer. Pushing out new shoots costs energy; cut in deep winter and you may just get a dried-up stub that never breaks.
- Decide the shape before you cut
Here's the single most useful thing I did.
Decide the finished shape before you pick up the scissors.
It sounds obvious, but if you don't, you will fail. Once you start cutting it's strangely absorbing, and you look up to find you've gone too far — the hairdresser problem, where "just a trim" ends in a buzz cut.
Before cutting, I set each pot's position and target height on a layout, so the direction is decided in advance: this one beside a shelf, so let it spread sideways; that one has nothing below it, so let it trail. I use the same garden planner layout I keep for the garden, with a note on how tall each pot should stay.
Decide the shape first, or regret the shape afterwards. The gap between those two is enormous.
Though for what it's worth: if you do overcut, it usually comes back. Houseplants are far tougher than we give them credit for. Two years of this taught me one thing — plants recover much faster than I assume they will.
- Sometimes it's a traffic problem, not a plant problem
Zooming out.
Whether you should cut a plant isn't only about the plant's health. It's also about how you move through your own home.
My pothos was in the way not because it was unhealthy but because it blocked the remote and the window. That wasn't a plant problem. That was a placement problem. It didn't need cutting; it needed to be somewhere else.
Think about the lines people actually walk, the arc your arm makes when opening a window, the furniture you shift when you vacuum. Pick plant spots with those in mind and "it grew too big" mostly stops happening. Human traffic patterns change far less than plants grow.
If you're rearranging, it's worth mapping movement and furniture first. Sketching a layout in something like house plan (https://houseplan.io/) and noting "this is a walkway, so it gets a low pot" lets you solve the problem at the buying stage instead of the cutting stage. A lot can be fixed with placement before it ever needs scissors. That is the considered opinion of a man who spent three months holding a pair of shears.
In the end, cutting it was right.
The vines came to nearly two metres in total. Five new shoots broke from the base, and the plant is now fuller than it ever was. One long, leggy strand became an actual plant.
And I couldn't throw those two metres away.
