Rainbow
A rainbow is a colorful arc that appears in the sky when sunlight shines through tiny water droplets in the air, usually after rain.
The colors appear in this order:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
A rainbow forms because of three processes:
- Refraction: Sunlight bends as it enters a raindrop.
- Reflection: The light reflects off the inside of the raindrop.
- Refraction again: As the light leaves the droplet, it bends once more and separates into different colors because each color bends by a slightly different amount.
Some interesting facts:
- A rainbow is always opposite the Sun. If the Sun is behind you and rain is in front of you, you may see one.
- No two people see exactly the same rainbow, because the light reaching each person’s eyes comes from different raindrops.
- Sometimes a double rainbow appears, with a second, fainter arc outside the first. In the second rainbow, the colors are reversed.
In short, a rainbow is a natural optical phenomenon created when sunlight is refracted, reflected, and dispersed by water droplets in the atmosphere.
