⚛️ 3 Mistakes Beginners Make While Learning React
My thoughts on learning React, avoiding common mistakes, and becoming a better developer.
🚀 Introduction
When I started learning web development, JavaScript was one of the important technologies I focused on. After understanding the basics of JavaScript, I became interested in learning React.
React is a popular JavaScript library used to build user interfaces. It makes it easier to create reusable components and develop dynamic web applications.
However, learning React as a beginner is not always easy. Sometimes we understand the concepts while watching tutorials, but when we try to write code ourselves, things become confusing.
I believe beginners don't need to learn everything quickly. They need to understand the basics properly and avoid some common mistakes.
Here are three mistakes that beginners should try to avoid while learning React.
❌ 1. Learning React Without Understanding JavaScript
This is one of the biggest mistakes beginners make.
Many people start React immediately because they want to build modern websites. But React is based on JavaScript, so understanding JavaScript fundamentals is important.
Before learning React, try to understand:
- Variables and data types
- Functions and arrow functions
- Arrays and objects
- Array methods like map() and filter()
- Promises and async/await
- Destructuring and spread operators
For example, React frequently uses the map() method to display lists of items.
If you don't understand JavaScript properly, React concepts can feel much more difficult.
My suggestion: Build a few small JavaScript projects before moving to React.
❌ 2. Copying Code Without Understanding It
Watching tutorials is helpful, but copying code line by line is not enough.
Sometimes beginners complete an entire project by following a video. Everything works, but when they try to create something independently, they don't know where to start.
This happens because they remember the code but don't understand the logic.
Instead, try this approach:
- Watch a small part of a tutorial.
- Write the code yourself.
- Understand what each component does.
- Change something in the project.
- Try to build the same feature without looking at the tutorial.
Making mistakes is completely normal. Debugging them is part of becoming a developer.
❌ 3. Ignoring Components and State Management
React is built around components.
Components allow developers to divide a large user interface into smaller, reusable parts.
For example, an online shopping application might have:
- Navbar component
- Product component
- Shopping cart component
- Footer component
Another important concept is State.
State helps React manage information that can change over time, such as a counter value, username, or shopping cart items.
Beginners sometimes put too much code into one component or don't understand when to use state.
My advice is to practise simple components and understand the useState hook before moving to more advanced topics.
💡 What Should Beginners Do Instead?
Learning React doesn't need to be complicated.
Start with the fundamentals, practise regularly, and build small projects.
Some beginner-friendly project ideas include:
- To-Do List App
- Simple Calculator
- Weather App
- Notes Application
- Product Listing Page
Don't worry about building a big application immediately. Focus on understanding how everything works.
🌱 Final Thoughts
Learning React is a journey, and every beginner makes mistakes along the way.
I believe the biggest difference between someone who only watches tutorials and someone who becomes a developer is practical experience.
Don't rush to learn every React library or advanced concept. First understand JavaScript, practise components, learn state management, and build projects independently.
Remember:
Don't just copy the code. Understand it, experiment with it, and make something of your own.
That's how you gradually become a better developer. 🚀
