NordVPN DNS Not Resolving: One Quick Test to Run Before You Reinstall Anything

in #resolving • 6 days ago (edited)

The NordVPN app said “Secured”. The lock was green. Not one page would load.

My first thought was that the app had broken. It had not. This is what NordVPN DNS not resolving looked like on my phone, and the short test that showed me what was really wrong.

First, confirm the tunnel is up

I opened the app and checked the status screen. It showed a Miami server, a new IP and a green border. If yours looks the same, the VPN itself is working, so do not reinstall yet.

My server was an obfuscated one, which is built for networks that block VPNs. I only tried this one server, so I cannot say whether that mattered. If you are on an obfuscated server, switching to a standard one is a cheap test.

Test two pages, not one

This is the step most people skip.

Open a neutral page. I used 1.1.1.1. It loaded, so my connection and DNS were working through the VPN.
Open the site you actually want. Mine was expressvpn.com. It failed with “connection reset”.

A connection reset is not a DNS error. It means the connection started and then got cut. One site failing while a neutral page loads usually points to that site blocking VPN traffic, or your mobile carrier interfering. I only tested one site on one server, so I cannot say which it was.

When it really is a DNS problem

If nothing loads by name, try this, cheapest first:

Switch to a different server.
Set DNS to Default in the app. On Android, also check the phone’s Private DNS.
Turn Threat Protection off for a minute.
Clear the app cache, then restart the phone.
Reinstall the app last.

I have not re-tested all of these on this exact problem, so I will not promise any one of them will work for you. Change one thing at a time, so you know which one mattered.

If you set a custom DNS earlier and it keeps causing trouble, see why NordVPN custom DNS stops working. If the app never reaches “Secured”, that is a different problem: NordVPN stuck on connecting. Once things work, you can see what a clean result looks like in my NordVPN vs ExpressVPN DNS leak test.

The full walkthrough with every screenshot is here: NordVPN DNS not resolving fix.

Tested on my own phone with the NordVPN app. Results vary by server, network and app version.
