Top Five Things to Do in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is much more than beaches, hotel pools and wondering whether 11:00 is too early for your first cocktail. The island is surprisingly diverse, with mountains, dunes, villages and some fantastic coastal scenery. Here are five experiences worth putting on your list.

1. Walk the Maspalomas Dunes

The Maspalomas Dunes are probably Gran Canaria's most recognizable natural attraction. Huge golden dunes stretch toward the Atlantic, creating scenery that looks more like the Sahara than a European holiday destination. Visit around sunset when temperatures are lower and the light is spectacular.

2. Explore Puerto de Mogán

Often nicknamed "Little Venice," Puerto de Mogán is one of the prettiest places on the island. You'll find colorful buildings, flowers, narrow streets, restaurants and a beautiful marina. Come for a walk, stay for lunch, and somehow lose half the day.

3. Drive Into the Mountains

Renting a car opens up another Gran Canaria entirely. Head inland toward Tejeda, mountain viewpoints and the area around Roque Nublo. The landscapes change dramatically as you climb, and you'll quickly understand why Gran Canaria is sometimes described as a "miniature continent."

4. Take a Dolphin and Whale-Watching Trip

Boat excursions leave from several southern ports, particularly around Puerto Rico and Mogán. Dolphins are frequently spotted in the waters surrounding the Canary Islands, making this one of the island's most memorable excursions. Just remember: nature doesn't offer guaranteed appointment times.

5. Have a Proper Beach Day

Finally, don't overcomplicate your holiday. Playa de Amadores, Anfi del Mar, Maspalomas and San Agustín all offer very different beach experiences.

Sometimes the best Gran Canaria attraction is simply the Atlantic, sunshine, cold drinks and absolutely nothing on your schedule.
