After more than six months of work, we're excited to announce that the completely rewritten Steem Wallet is now live at steemitwallet.com.

This is not a facelift — it's a ground-up rewrite of the entire wallet application, replacing years of accumulated technical debt with a modern, maintainable foundation.

Highlights

Modern technology stack. The new wallet is built on Next.js 16 and React 19 with strict TypeScript throughout, a modern component system, and built-in internationalization (English, 中文, Español). The old stack had become nearly impossible to extend safely; the new one is designed for change.

Security-first architecture. Your private keys never leave your browser. All transactions are constructed and signed locally on your device. The server never sees, stores, or transmits your keys — it acts purely as a relay that forwards your signed transactions to the blockchain. Login uses a challenge-signature scheme: you prove key ownership by signing, not by sending your key anywhere.

A protective relay layer. All blockchain traffic now flows through a relay layer that exists for one reason: protecting the public API infrastructure. With traffic consolidated, we gain rate limiting, caching, and failover capabilities that simply weren't possible when every browser talked directly to the API node. The result should be a noticeably more stable experience during peak load.

Full feature parity. Everything you could do in the old wallet is here: transfers (with the same memo-safety and phishing warnings), savings deposits and withdrawals, Power Down, vesting delegations, SBD conversion, the internal market with order book and limit orders, SPS proposal voting, witness voting, account permissions and password management, and the full two-step account recovery flow.

Reliability engineering. The new wallet ships with proper health checks, distributed tracing, and graceful degradation — if a backing service is unavailable, the wallet degrades specific features instead of failing wholesale.

Why this matters

The biggest win of this rewrite is invisible: it fills in years of technical debt. The legacy codebase had grown fragile — every new feature meant negotiating with outdated dependencies and architectural decisions from another era. The new foundation is clean, typed, tested (over 1,100 automated tests), and documented. Future features that would have taken weeks of careful archaeology can now be built directly.

A note on how it was built

This project was developed with an AI-driven workflow — AI agents writing, reviewing, and testing code under human direction. We're still refining this process, and it's getting better every week. Going forward, community contributions to the wallet should also use AI-driven development — we'll publish a dedicated tutorial on how to do this soon. Watch this space.

Known issues

We're being upfront about what's not perfect yet:

1. Steem Keychain is not supported. Login currently requires your posting (or higher) private key directly. Keychain integration is a deliberate omission for now.
2. Transaction history has rough edges. The history feature is constrained by the capabilities of the current chain API, and some operations may display imperfectly or be missing detail.
3. UI differences and bugs. We've worked hard to faithfully reproduce the legacy UI, but there will be differences — and probably some bugs we haven't found yet.
