RE: Seven Floors of Small Talk. Notes from the Elevator
The unspoken elevator rulebook is fascinating especially how the first rule creates such immediate intimacy through avoidance. I've noticed this extends to how we shift our weight when the car lurches as if we're all dancing the same awkward dance. What's the most surprising nonverbal cue you've collected from these vertical pauses?
The awkward dance of weight shifting is a real receipt. One time the car dropped two floors and everyone instinctively grabbed the handrail except for one woman who braced with her briefcase like it was a shield. That briefcase became the unexpected center of our temporary alliance.
