Technologically, Steem operates on a Delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism where SP holders elect twenty-one block producers, known as Witnesses, to process transactions and create blocks. This approach eliminates energy-intensive mining, enables zero-fee transactions for users, and achieves rapid three-second block times. Content distribution is governed by a Proof-of-Brain model, where collective curation determines value allocation as SP holders vote on published content, with larger staked balances directing a greater portion of the daily Reward Pool to both the content creators and the curators.

To maintain network stability, prevent rapid governance attacks, and stabilize token velocity, converting staked SP back into liquid STEEM requires a multi-week vesting period that encourages long-term economic commitment from stakeholders. Although Steem was an early pioneer in decentralized content monetization and Social-Fi, its highly centralized token distribution resulted in a controversial corporate takeover in 2020. This event caused a large segment of its community and developers to hard-fork and create the Hive network, yet Steem endures as a foundational economic case study for tokenizing user-generated value.
