You’re Actually Moving Much Faster Than You Think

Take a moment and stop.

Sit quietly in your chair. Look around. Nothing seems to be moving. There’s no strong wind, no sound of an engine, and even your own body feels completely still.

But in reality, you’re moving at an incredible speed.

Earth is rotating on its axis. Around the equator, the surface of Earth moves at roughly 1,600 kilometers per hour (about 1,000 miles per hour). That means while you’re sitting here reading this, you’re actually spinning around Earth’s axis faster than most cars ever travel.

And that’s not all.

Earth is also orbiting the Sun at roughly 107,000 kilometers per hour (about 67,000 miles per hour).

So while you feel like you’re sitting still in your room, you’re actually traveling on a giant journey around the Sun.

And the Sun itself isn’t standing still either.

The Sun, along with the entire solar system, is moving around the center of the Milky Way at hundreds of thousands of kilometers per hour. Our galaxy is also moving relative to other galaxies.

In other words, “standing still” is really just a description based on a particular point of reference.

We don’t feel all this movement because almost everything around us is moving together. The air, our homes, the ground, the oceans, and our bodies are all moving along with Earth. There’s no sudden change in motion for our bodies to easily detect.

And that’s one of the strangest things about everyday life.

You can be sitting alone in your room, feeling like you haven’t gone anywhere, while in reality, you’re on a rotating planet, orbiting a star, as the entire solar system travels through the galaxy.

So the next time someone asks, “Where are you going?”, maybe the answer is actually pretty simple:

“Everywhere. I just can’t feel it.”
