How Much Tax Will You Pay for a Hotel Night in Amsterdam in 2031?

in #steemit • 2 months ago

Staying overnight in Amsterdam is already expensive, but if the planned tourist tax increase goes ahead, taxes will become a surprisingly large part of your hotel bill.

As explained in our article about Amsterdam's tourist tax rising to 21% by 2031, the city currently charges a tourist tax of 12.5%. The plan is for this to gradually increase to 21% in 2031.

At the same time, there is another tax to remember: VAT (BTW). Since January 1, 2026, hotel accommodation in the Netherlands is subject to the standard 21% VAT rate, instead of the previous reduced rate of 9%.

That means that in 2031 we could effectively be looking at 21% VAT plus 21% Amsterdam tourist tax.

What does that mean in euros?

To make things simple, imagine the quoted room price below is the accommodation price before these taxes are added.

Room price21% VAT21% tourist taxTotal taxesFinal price
€50€10.50€10.50€21€71
€500€105€105€210€710
€2,500€525€525€1,050€3,550

A €50 room therefore generates approximately €21 in VAT and tourist tax, while someone spending €500 on accommodation could face around €210 in taxes. At the luxury end, a €2,500 hotel stay could involve more than €1,000 in VAT and tourist tax.

There is one important detail: hotel and booking websites often display prices differently. VAT may already be included in the advertised room price, while Amsterdam's tourist tax might only appear later during booking or be payable at the hotel. The precise calculation can therefore differ from the simplified examples above.

The practical lesson is simple: when comparing hotels and accommodation in Amsterdam, always look at the final amount payable, rather than only the attractive room price shown in the search results.
