Steemit Update [August 31st, 2026] : Steemit Challenge Season 34 - Update & Something New
We hope you have all been enjoying the new format of the Steemit Challenge.
As we mentioned last week, Season 34 is very much experimental allowing new ideas to be tried with the primary goals of improving post quality and increasing community engagement.
There have been mixed results so far - particularly with regard to the correct use of tags.
Participation has been reasonable - but there is definitely scope for improvement.
This week we are going to introduce another new element to help with this.
Season 34 : Progress
Thank you to everyone who has participated so far.
The four ways of taking part - Engagement, Improvement, Guides and Weekly Choices - are seeing very different levels of uptake.
Engagement
Engagement, through comments on posts, is the most successful. We are definitely seeing an increased number of comments with the tag #s34engagement.
However some people are struggling in writing worthwhile comments. A good engaging comment should be about starting a discussion - asking questions, expanding on elements of the post, adding your own relevant experience etc.
Just saying how wonderful a post is and repeating back the content of the post is not a very useful comment and is unlikely to be rewarded.
Needless to say, using AI to generate comments is a very definite BIG NO. A couple of people have already been found to be doing that.
Improvement
This is the most disappointing part of the Challenge so far.
We have seen very few comments using the #s34improvement tag and offering constructive criticism and useful tips to help people improve their posts.
Votes may be increased on good improvement comments to encourage more people to make them.
If anyone has been making a lot of improvement comments and we have missed them please compile them into a weekly summary post.
Guides
There has been a small trickle of How to / Guide type posts - and we thank the people who have taken the time to produce these.
We hope to see more of these posts under the #s34guides tag.
Weekly Choices
These are just starting to come through and we are looking forward to seeing more using the #s34weekly tag.
@enrisanti’s weekly choice post is a good example of what we are looking for…
Contests
It is great to see a good variety of contests, but the very low prize values on many do concern us.
Considering the very low value of STEEM at the moment, prizes of just a few STEEM, often just one or two, are unlikely to be a great incentive to encourage participation.
We are therefore giving votes to a number of contests to encourage significantly higher prizes.
For first prizes we would consider 10 STEEM to be a bare minimum.
Season 34 : Adding a new type of Challenge
As Season 34 is very much an experimental season we want to add one new type of Challenge to help increase participation.
For this we will be setting a Challenge question that we would like people to answer in a post.
The first Challenge question for this coming week is…
- How do you use AI in your personal life and in your work?
Posts should be at least 300 words and can be in any language.
If you do not use AI at all, you can write a post about why you do not use it.
These challenge posts should use the tag #s34challenge001.
As well as making posts on this question to earn rewards, we will give votes to some of the best engagement and improvement comments. We are particularly looking for people to give grading comments with scores out of 10 as in previous Challenges.
At the end of the week, people are also welcome to select their three favorite posts to add to the Weekly Choice posts alongside contests and diary games.
This Challenge question will remain open until 11:59pm UTC on Sunday, September 6th, 2026.

We hope the addition of the new Challenge question will encourage more people to take part.
One thing we would ask is that people are careful how they use the Season 34 tags. Do not just add multiple tags to your posts in the hope they will attract more attention from sc01/02. Use them only on the appropriate comments and posts as requested.

I believe we should all recognize the importance of comments that are substantive, enriching, and relevant to the post. Many comments lack relevance or significance, leaving us somewhat unsure of how to respond to them.
I previously wrote a post specifically about commenting—not just on challenge entries, but on posts in general. The key point was how a comment can open up a space for meaningful discussion, benefiting even those Steemians who didn't create the original post.
To foster better interaction among Steemians worldwide, I suggest rewarding comments that are high-quality, relevant, insightful, and useful. Conversely, I do not think we need to respond to—let alone reward—brief, sycophantic comments merely intended to grab attention.

Estoy de acuerdo con tu punto de vista. Comentar es interactuar. Hace un tiempo atrás, cuando me propuse hacer bien el trabajo en la plataforma, una de las cosas fue comentar e interactuar. Fue un reto para mí, pero gracias a Dios me topé con gente maravillosa. Una de ellas fue la carismática @vivigibelis, comenté en uno de sus diarios. Este nos contaba de un "gato malandro" que llegaba a su casa.
Luego, conocí en persona a esta usuario. Viviana es un gran ejemplo para mí, y un gran apoyo en ésta plataforma. Así que los comentarios no son solo para ganar una recompensa. Van más allá, nos mantienen unidos haciendo comunidad.

Jajajajajaj como olvidar ese episodio luna jajaja Gracias por ese halago y es que en verdad todo el tema de comentar publicaciones es asi, hay veces que nos trae mucha risa, otras tristezas, es el mero hecho de ponernos en el lugar de la persona y más porque los diarios son tan personales y muestran esa faceta de cada uno y por supuesto nos ayuda a interactuar y mantenernos unidos y crear como esa familiaridad. I completely agree. The comment section should be more than a place for quick greetings, compliments, or one line reactions. It should be a space where ideas are exchanged, perspectives are challenged respectfully, and meaningful conversations are created.
I also believe that rewards play an important role in encouraging proper engagement. When people know that thoughtful, relevant, insightful, and genuinely helpful contributions are recognized, it gives them an additional reason to take the time to read a post carefully and contribute something valuable.
The goal should not be to reward comments simply because they are comments, but to reward the quality and value they bring to the conversation. A well written comment can add a new perspective, provide useful information, ask an intelligent question, or encourage the author and other readers to think more deeply about the subject.
This creates a healthy cycle: quality posts attract quality comments, quality comments create meaningful discussions, and meaningful engagement deserves recognition.
At the same time, we should be careful not to create a culture where people comment merely for rewards. Recognition should encourage authenticity, not empty engagement or sycophancy.
Ultimately, if we want a stronger and more interactive Steem community, we need to make people understand that their voice matters and meaningful contributions should be appreciated.
The comment section should not simply show that someone visited a post. It should show that someone actually read, understood, thought about it, and contributed to the conversation.

I wanted to ask a question and is unrelated to the post. What happened to @disconnect? Those contest he/she was compiling every day contributed to a huge part of my success when I returned back to steemit.
I may not be as active as I use to be b4 but there are still many of us that believes that just writing random post won't get you the needed upvote except you partake in a contest and win some steem/SP. Back then, participating contest was one way to get noticed by big steemians and gradually build themselves on the platform.
It does have its disadvantages because it starts getting boring when you read a particular topic from different contestants over and over again. But to a large extent it gave people who don't have anything to write about a topic to write on and in return make some cool steem for themselves, gain visibility and build confidence to keep creating more content.

I have made a few comment in all categories but some of which are not even traceable like the one under #s34improvement (Maybe only you have access to them}. Also, if you raise any question the result will definitely sour the relations between Steemians. For instance I did one today under an Improver's post and got what I deserved, a taunting reply which confused me even more. I would rather skip than finding myself on the wrong side. Thank you!
