My Wife Blamed Me For The Snacks She Ate At Night..
What I found in my boyfriend's phone made me cry. So, for context, we've been together a little over two years. We met in line for a food truck when his card got declined and I covered his burrito. He paid me back with a date. Since then, we basically live at each other's places and we're that couple that swaps phones without thinking. He orders my food.
I skip his songs. Neither of us has anything to hide. At least that's what I thought until last week. My phone died right as we were about to order our usual takeout. He tossed me his from across the couch without even looking up from the TV. Totally normal. I've done this a 100 times. I opened the food app, started typing, and a notification slid down from the top of the screen.
It was from an app I'd never seen before. No message, no preview, just three words. It's day 214. That's it. Day 214. And I need to be honest about what happened in my body because I'm not proud of it. My stomach dropped through the floor. My last relationship ended because of what I found on a phone.
So when I see a mystery app counting something, my brain does not go anywhere nice. It goes straight to the worst place. Day 214 of what? A streak with someone? A countdown to leaving? Something he needed to hide? I know you're not supposed to snoop. I know. For a second, I almost put the phone down and pretended I never saw anything.
But my thumb was already moving. I tapped it. It opened to this plain boring little journal app. White background, no photos, just dated entries, one per day. And today's entry written at 7:00 a.m. before I was even awake said, "She sang the wrong words to the coffee jingle again confidently. Still the best part of my morning. I just sat there because that did happen.
3 hours earlier in his kitchen. I butchered that jingle and he laughed so hard he choked on his coffee. I scrolled up. Day 21 and 13. Fell asleep mid-sentence telling me about her big presentation. Finished the story for her at breakfast. She looked at me like I was psychic. Day 202. We fought about the dishes.
She apologized first and it was not even her fault. Do better. Do the dishes." Day 176. She didn't get the internship. She was brave about it all day and cried at night. Next time someone tells her no, I want a front row seat to her proving them wrong. Day 168. She had the flu, could barely talk, and still texted to ask if I ate lunch.
Who does that? Day 141. Bad day at her job. She cried in the car and pretended it was allergies. Learned to make that soup her mom makes. Day 120. She snapped at me today. Came back an hour later and explained why calmly like an adult. I'm learning from her. Day 89. She waves at dogs from the car like they can see her.
I hope they can. Day 33. She sorts her fries by size before she eats them. Smallest to biggest. I've never mentioned it. I never will. It's perfect. I kept scrolling. Day after day after day, every single one had an entry. Not big romantic speeches. Tiny things. things I didn't know he noticed. Things I didn't even know I did about myself. Some entries were three words.
Some were half a page. One was just she's asleep on my arm. Can't move. Worth it. I even checked for gaps. Days he skipped. There aren't any. Not one. Even the day he had dude poisoning. The entry just says too sick to write. She stayed. That's the whole entry. She stayed. And then I got to day one. Day one was the night of our first date.
It said, "I don't want to jinx this." But I think I just met the person starting this. So if I'm right, I'll have roof I knew from day one. I read that entry five times. I was there that night. I was nervous and overdressed and rambling about my burrito order. And apparently he already knew.
I was full-on crying at this point. Sitting on his couch holding his phone, mascara everywhere, takeout completely forgotten. And this man has been writing down one reason he loves me every single day for 214 days and never said a single word about it. And the whole time I genuinely thought I was the one in this relationship who loved harder.
Then I saw the note pinned at the very top of the app. Day 365. Read her all of them. I did the math with shaking hands. Day 365 is our anniversary. He's planning to sit me down on our anniversary and read me an entire year of prove that he pays attention. 365 entries out loud to my face. And our anniversary is still 5 months away, which means five more months of him doing this quietly every single night thinking nobody knows.
That's when he walked back in with our drinks and saw me sitting there bone in hand absolutely wrecked. He panicked. started asking what was wrong, what happened, who called. I couldn't get a single word out. I just turned the phone around and held it up. He froze, went completely pale, and then he did the softest smile I have ever seen on a human being.
