Difficulties interacting with Steemit via Linux Mint, but not with Pop!_OS

in #tech • 2 days ago

A few years back I decided to delve into Linux because I had used a friend's system and he was talking about how great it was constantly. This, as it turns out, is an aspect of nearly all Linux users and they do seem to be quite proud of themselves for not using Windows or MacOS. Nothing wrong with it I guess, I just don't share his rather intense joy for not using mainstream software.

I do like that it is free though, and always will be, which is something I can't really understand.

It doesn't mean that it is infallible though, and I do have some issues with Mint every now and then and as far as I know it could be a hardware conflict or something along those lines. I am not a super-user and if I ever want to change something about my software environment, I am one of those guys that needs to be able to search the internet in order to figure it out.

Anyway, Steemit is one of the things that I use on my computer about as much as anything else, and I have noticed that on one of my machines, my main machine, the one that is running Mint, somedays just decides that it doesn't want to "play" with Steemit and I wonder if this is an isolated incident or if it has happened with other people.

Like I indicated earlier, I do not know what the issue is, but I do know a few ways to resolve it if you are having a similar problem.

The main page loads in some degree, but the various aspects of the page are all out of whack so it kind of looks like websites did back in the "olden days" when websites were basic text and everything is in a different place than you expect it to be. When I click on log-in or and of the various things that used to be on the page for help logging in with the various key-rememberer-things, none of them actually do anything. I wish I had taken a screen of this but I don't actually want to force it to happen again in order to make that happen, nor do I know how to.

I thought at first that perhaps the site was down globally, but a search with Online or not? the results returned that it was in fact live and online.

Mint simply didn't want to play with it. I thought it could be a browser thing but I have Brave (my primary), Firefox, and Chromium on this machine and all of them produced the same results.

One time I was able to sort this by doing a hard refresh of all the tabs I have open by typing CNTL+Shift+R but then in other subsequent times, this didn't work. Other times a full restart of the system would do it, and on one other particularly difficult instance, I had to completely power-down and leave it for a few minutes then boot back up. The only one of these methods that has worked every time was a full shutdown followed by a period of power off followed by booting back up from scratch.

Like I said, I am not a super-user and if these tactics sound like the work of a novice that is because I am a novice.

Now let's move onto what I have on my travel computer and that is Pop!_OS, another Linux distribution that I don't like as much as Mint but just have it on there because I wanted to play with it and I almost never use that other computer anyway.

One day I was tooling around on Steemit and I ran into the aforementioned problems. I was getting ticked off about it and I figured that I would just take my other computer and go to a cafe and see if it sorted itself out. At that time I was still presuming it was a server side issue but when I got to the cafe and booted up and went to Steemit, everything was fine. I didn't know what to think at this point but I did my Steem-er-ing without a hitch.

Later, when this problem reared its ugly head on Mint again, I booted up my Pop!_OS system at the same desk only to discover that Steemit wasn't having any issues at all it was just a case of one OS deciding that it wasn't going to play and the other not having an issue with it at all.

If you managed to read all the way through that I congratulate you. I tend to get a bit wordy when the tip-tap of my fingers starts a-flowin'.

Two questions though: Any idea to any good users or Linux out there as to why this might be happening? and two, regardless of what OS you are using have you ever encountered a similar problem?

It's clearly not the fault of anything on Steemit but apparently just an issue with Mint. It doesn't happen all the time, it's quite rare when it happens, but now I know for sure that when it does happen on my Mint system, it doesn't happen on my Pop!_OS system.

Any thoughts?
