Running a dedicated server without monitoring is like driving without a dashboard. You only find out about a problem when something breaks.

Prometheus is a free, open-source monitoring toolkit that collects time-series metrics, stores them locally and lets you query them with PromQL. Combined with Node Exporter, it shows how your Linux server is really performing.

What the tutorial covers
Preparing Ubuntu 24.04 and creating unprivileged service accounts
Downloading and verifying the official Prometheus and Node Exporter binaries
Writing and validating prometheus.yml with promtool
Creating systemd services for automatic start and restart
Checking health with the readiness endpoint and the up metric
Accessing the interface through an SSH tunnel
PromQL queries for CPU, memory, filesystem space, network and disk activity
Adding more dedicated servers as monitoring targets
Security matters

Metrics endpoints can reveal details about your infrastructure. The guide keeps both services bound to localhost, and when you expand it recommends private networks and firewall rules instead of public exposure.

Who is this for?

System administrators, developers and hosting customers who want a reliable monitoring foundation for databases, game servers, storage servers or AI workloads on bare-metal hardware.
