Relaxing during lunch break

Hello, Steemians, welcome to another edition of my diary, where I share with you how I spent my day.

Today, I give glory to God for giving me another opportunity to witness a beautiful day. I woke up, swept my room, did some workouts, brushed my teeth, and attended to the house chores. I spent about 30 minutes exercising because I wanted to concentrate on my workout before heading out for the day's activities.

I had already packed my clothes the previous night, so I only needed to arrange the other things I would be taking to the site. I gathered my personal protective equipment (PPE), including my safety jacket, safety boots, socks, glasses, gloves, nose mask, and earplugs. I arranged everything and packed them inside the bag I normally take to work.

According to reports I heard on the news, different parts of Nigeria are currently experiencing intense heat. With this kind of weather, one tends to consume more water than usual. I decided to take my water bottle along so I would have enough water to drink at the site. I filled it with water, closed it properly, and placed it inside my bag before going to bed.

After completing my preparations, I took my bath, dressed up, applied my perfume, body cream, and hair cream before stepping out. I trekked to the yard, which took me nothing less than 25 minutes. Immediately I arrived, I met the security personnel at the entrance. I greeted them, opened the gate, and entered the premises.

On my way to the yard

After signing in, I went to the office to check the batteries of my surveying instruments. This is an important part of our preparation because we need to be sure that the instruments can last throughout the working hours. I checked all of them one after another and confirmed that their batteries were in good condition. I then packed the instruments inside one of our vehicles. Other members of the surveying department also arrived with their equipment. We have two vehicles that we normally use to transport ourselves and our instruments from the yard to the construction site.

When everybody had assembled, we completed the necessary signing procedures and prepared to leave. We eventually set out for the site, and the journey took us about 30 minutes. By the time we arrived, the excavators and contractors were already working. We set up our instruments and checked several control points. We checked points about one kilometre ahead and another one kilometre behind to confirm that the information on the ground corresponded with what we had on the system.

After completing the checks, we stayed around the excavators because our assignment depended on their work. Until they finished their activities, we would not be able to continue with our surveying work. We had to wait for them to complete the excavation before carrying out our own assignment.

Active on site

By the time they finished, it was already around closing time. We picked the necessary points and collected the field data for the filled and cut areas. That was all we were able to accomplish at the site today.

Working under the scorching sun was not easy, especially with the intense heat throughout the day. It made our activities quite stressful, but I thank God for the strength to carry on. In this kind of work, different departments sometimes depend on one another before certain activities can be completed. Today was another example of how important teamwork and patience are in our daily work.

Going home after work

That was how I spent my day. Despite the stress and the heat, I am grateful to God for another day of work and the opportunity to return safely.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read through my diary. I appreciate you all.

The biggest problem on any construction site: when one trade depends on another, conflicts arise. The schedules are often unrealistic...
