Why Token Unlocks Are Becoming a Bigger Risk Than TGE Hype
A token generation event (TGE) often represents the most visible moment in a crypto project’s lifecycle. Teams spend months building anticipation around exchange listings, community campaigns, partnerships, airdrops, and launch announcements. The first trading day can generate enormous attention and, in strong market conditions, substantial price appreciation.
Yet TGE hype can hide a less visible problem: what happens after the launch?
A token may enter the market with a small circulating supply while a much larger percentage remains locked for investors, founders, advisors, ecosystem participants, and treasury allocations. Those tokens do not disappear. They are waiting to enter circulation according to a vesting schedule.
This makes token unlocks one of the most important risks in modern tokenomics. Recent research reinforces the concern. A 2026 study of 52 major Binance-listed unlock events found that 46, or 88.5%, experienced negative returns within 72 hours of the event, with an average return of -16.97%. The research is preliminary and does not establish causation, but it highlights how concentrated unlock periods can coincide with severe price pressure.
The bigger lesson is clear: TGE creates attention, but unlock design can determine whether that attention turns into sustainable market value.
TGE Hype Can Create a False Sense of Strength
A TGE can produce impressive early numbers. A project launches with a limited circulating supply, strong community interest, and exchange liquidity. The resulting market capitalization can look healthy even though most of the maximum supply remains locked.
This creates a crucial distinction between initial market conditions and fully diluted economics.
Consider a hypothetical project with a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens but only 100 million tokens circulating at TGE. If the market values the token at $1, the circulating market capitalization is $100 million. Yet the fully diluted valuation is $1 billion.
That gap represents future supply.
If demand does not grow fast enough to absorb that supply, each subsequent unlock can create additional selling pressure. Investors who focus exclusively on TGE price action can miss this structural risk.
The problem becomes more serious when early investors acquired tokens at prices far below the public market price. An investor with a $0.10 acquisition cost has a very different incentive from a retail buyer who entered at $1.
Why Unlocks Create Supply Shock

This explains why the headline dollar value of an unlock can sometimes be misleading. The more useful question is:
How much new liquid supply is entering the market relative to the existing float and trading liquidity?
The Real Risk Is Often the Float, Not the Unlock Amount
Suppose a token has 50 million tokens circulating and an upcoming unlock releases another 10 million.
The headline figure is a 10 million-token unlock. But the more important figure is that the circulating supply could increase by 20%.
Now compare that with a project that has 500 million tokens circulating and releases the same 10 million tokens. The increase is only 2%.
The same absolute unlock therefore creates very different supply conditions.
Market depth adds another layer. If a token has limited liquidity, even modest selling can move the price substantially. A large unlock can represent several days of average trading volume, making it difficult for the market to absorb the new supply without price adjustment. Current research frameworks increasingly examine unlocks against circulating supply, trading volume, and liquidity rather than relying on the raw number of tokens released.

A cliff unlock releases a large allocation after a predetermined lock period. A linear vesting model, by comparison, distributes tokens gradually over time.
Cliffs can create sharper supply shocks because a large amount of previously illiquid supply becomes transferable around the same date.
Imagine a project where early investors receive 20% of their allocation after a one-year cliff. If the market price has risen substantially since those investors entered, the economic incentive to realize gains can be powerful.
The project may have strong fundamentals, but the market still has to absorb additional supply.
That is why vesting structure should not be treated as an administrative detail. It is part of the token's market design.
The Market Often Prices Unlocks Before They Happen
One common mistake is to assume that the biggest risk occurs on the actual unlock date.
Because vesting schedules are often public, traders can anticipate future supply. Positioning can begin days or weeks before tokens become transferable.
Tokenomist's 2026 research covering 236 unlock events found that the median one-month move was -16.26% on a raw basis, while the controlled comparison showed the strongest effects concentrated in early-stage, thin-float tokens. Its analysis also found that established, more liquid tokens showed much weaker effects.
Earlier research from Animoca Brands found that large unlocks above 1% of circulating supply were associated with an average 0.3% price decline during the week before the unlock and another 0.3% during the following week. The research also found that the strongest effects occurred around the days surrounding the event rather than simply on the unlock date.
This creates a critical strategic implication:
Unlock risk should be managed as a market window, not a single calendar date.
TGE and Unlocks Have Opposite Psychological Effects
TGE creates a narrative around scarcity, novelty, access, and potential upside.
Unlocks introduce the opposite narrative: dilution, selling pressure, and uncertainty about future supply.
That psychological shift can matter as much as the mechanical increase in circulating tokens.
A project might spend months telling its community about partnerships and product development. Then an upcoming investor unlock becomes the dominant conversation across social platforms and trading communities.
This can create a feedback loop:
Unlock announcement → anticipation → reduced buying interest → price weakness → increased fear → more selling.
The result can be especially damaging when the project has limited real utility or weak organic demand.
Not Every Unlock Is Bearish
It is important not to reduce tokenomics to the idea that every unlock causes a price crash.
An unlock simply creates the possibility of additional supply. The actual outcome depends on demand, holder behavior, liquidity, market conditions, and the purpose of the allocation.
Tokens distributed to an ecosystem treasury may remain unused. Tokens allocated for long-term staking may not immediately reach exchanges. Strong protocol revenue or growing utility can generate new demand capable of absorbing additional supply.
Market conditions matter too. A strong bull market can absorb supply that would be difficult to digest during a risk-off period.
Tokenomist's 2026 analysis found that established tokens with deeper liquidity showed little clean unlock effect compared with early-stage tokens.
The correct conclusion is therefore not "unlocks always crash prices."
It is:
Large unlocks become dangerous when new liquid supply grows faster than genuine demand and market liquidity.
What Projects Should Change in Their Tokenomics
Token issuers need to treat vesting as a core component of token design rather than something added after allocation decisions are made.
A stronger approach involves aligning unlock schedules with the project's ability to create demand.
This can include:
- Smaller and more frequent releases instead of large cliffs
- Longer vesting periods for stakeholders with large allocations
- Clear disclosure of every major unlock
- Monitoring unlocks against circulating supply and trading volume
- Linking ecosystem emissions to measurable adoption
- Reviewing investor and team incentives before TGE
- Maintaining sufficient liquidity around major supply events
The 6th Man Ventures research specifically suggested keeping individual unlocks below 1% of circulating supply where practical and favoring more frequent releases over large quarterly or annual events.
These approaches do not eliminate selling pressure. They distribute it more gradually and make supply growth easier for the market to absorb.
The Post-TGE Period Deserves More Attention
The crypto industry has historically placed enormous emphasis on getting tokens to market. Yet launching a token is only the beginning of its supply lifecycle.
The months following TGE reveal whether tokenomics can support the project's growth.
A healthy launch therefore requires more than exchange listings and initial liquidity. Teams need to understand how circulating supply will evolve, when major allocations become transferable, who receives those tokens, and whether organic demand can keep pace.
The most important metric may not be how high a token trades on launch day, but how well it absorbs new supply months later.
