Have you ever heard of AIESEC? Is a youth NGO in which you can go to these exotic places for 6 weeks and really make a difference there, meet people and even help. You should check it if you are under 29 http://aiesec.org/students/volunteer-abroad/
Thank you for sharing this! I had not heard of them - sounds much better than the 'orphanage tours' that have cropped up over the years.
