Underwear Factory China: Is Your “Low-Cost” Supplier Creating Expensive Problems?
You approved the sample. The fabric felt right, the fit looked correct, and the waistband had the expected stretch. Then the bulk order arrived—and the fabric felt different, the labels were wrong, the elastic lost recovery, or the size measurements had shifted.
This is a costly private-label underwear problem because a good development sample does not automatically guarantee repeatable bulk production. The real risk begins when the factory starts cutting thousands of units without a controlled record of exactly what was approved.
A vague instruction such as “make it like the sample” leaves too much room for material substitutions, pattern changes, different thread, altered elastic, or packaging errors. When one component changes, the final underwear can change with it.
A controlled Bill of Materials (BOM) prevents this. It should identify every approved item, including main fabric, gusset fabric, waistband elastic, thread, labels, hangtags, care labels, packaging, cartons, printing, and accessories. If an approved material is unavailable, the replacement should not enter production without written review.
The pre-production, or PP, sample is the last checkpoint before bulk cutting. It should match the intended production configuration: final fabric, colors, measurements, waistband, stitching, labeling, packing method, and quality requirements. It is not a formality—it is the buyer’s opportunity to find problems before they become thousands of unsellable garments.
If a factory cannot maintain BOM control, PP-sample approval, measurement tolerances, and formal change control, the buyer may face returns, delayed launches, failed inspections, and costly rework. The product may still resemble the original sample, but resemblance is not enough for a brand that needs reliable reorders.
The goal is simple: no material, trim, pattern, or construction change should reach the production line without written approval.
