While the rest of the world talks about energy prices going up. Vietnam is about to reduce theirs

Man I don't even know what is going on in this country and how anything works. I am consistently surprised at how well things work though seeing as how you rarely ever hear anything from the government and VERY RARELY see police officers anywhere.

I have only lived in 2 countries outside of my home of USA (home in that this is what is on the cover of my passport) and I have never lived anywhere with an electrical grid as reliable as the one I am dealing with now. The power almost never goes out and when it does, it is a planned maintenance that was announced to the area days or even weeks before it happens. If you get caught off-guard, it is probably because your landlord didn't tell you.

Suffice to say though, I have been very happy with utilities in this country, much more so than in my own country that is always claiming to be the best at everything.

Electricity prices here were already low. Sometimes low to the point where you don't really even pay much attention to the bill when it arrives. Some landlords will tack on a bit for themselves but the prevailing opinion of most people here is that "as long as they don't get too greedy, they can have it."

But I was surprised, when I see on social media where everyone is complaining non-stop about energy prices increasing to the point of affordability, that Vietnam is actually going to reduce the electricity cost for the first time in a couple of decades.

Before we get too excited about our generous overlords we should look at the graph and realize that it has always gone up, but I suppose it should because of inflation. For most of us, this 2% reduction in electric cost will probably go by completely unnoticed. I know that for me personally unless my electric bill is outrageously over what I am expecting, I don't even look at the figures and just pay it. But I suppose since there is a push to encourage people to buy electric vehicles as well, that this could all be interconnected. Or, it could be corruption because VinFast (the EV car manufacturer) has free charging stations to all new car buyers and maybe they are the reason why this 2% drop in costs could be happening. Just because the government here is covert doesn't exclude them from potential corruption!

They are pretty professional about it though. I know that there are loads of pictures in a lot of the world of a bunch of dudes wearing non-descript clothes with no helmet, climbing a bamboo ladder and wearing flipflops and then just walking across the overhead lines. Here, when some sort of service happens, it is always guys like the ones in the picture above.

I guess this is all just one more reason why I am quite happy to be living where I do. Electric cost was never really much of an issue for me but to hear that they are reducing how much it costs is always a welcome thing. Now if we could just do something about the skyrocketing property prices!

Great read! I share your appreciation for how smooth utility management and maintenance usually are here those planned outage notices save so much headache compared to random blackouts. That 2% drop might not be a massive saving on the monthly bill, but given global energy trends, even a minor cut is a very welcome surprise! Enjoyed your take on this!

Oh, electricity prices are a really big issue at the moment, just after petrol prices... It seems so arbitrary at times. And because we’re dependent on them, it makes you feel helpless at the same time...
