Investing in Water: Where to Put Your Money If You Believe Water Will Become the World's Most Valuable Resource
Many people believe that artificial intelligence, robotics, and semiconductors will dominate the coming decades. But another long-term investment theme is quietly gaining attention: water.
As climate change, population growth, pollution, and aging infrastructure put increasing pressure on freshwater supplies, clean water is becoming one of the world's most critical resources. While no one can own water itself in most countries, investors can gain exposure to companies that help produce, transport, clean, and manage it.
One of the simplest ways is through water-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These funds own shares in dozens of companies involved in water treatment, filtration, pumps, pipes, desalination, and infrastructure. Instead of betting on a single company, you spread the risk across an entire industry.
Several well-known water ETFs include:
- iShares Global Water ETF (IH2O)
- Invesco Water Resources ETF (PHO)
- Invesco Global Water ETF (PIO)
- First Trust Water ETF (FIW)
These funds typically invest in companies such as Xylem, American Water Works, Veolia, Pentair, Ecolab, and other businesses that provide essential water-related technologies and services.
Another strategy is to invest directly in individual companies. Water utilities often generate stable income because people always need drinking water. Industrial companies that manufacture filtration systems, smart water meters, pumps, and leak detection equipment may also benefit as governments invest billions in modernizing water networks.
Of course, no investment theme is guaranteed to outperform the market. Water-related companies can still be affected by economic slowdowns, regulations, interest rates, and market sentiment. However, if you believe that access to clean water will become one of the defining challenges of the 21st century, investing in businesses that solve these problems could be an interesting way to position a long-term portfolio.
The world may never run out of water, but clean, accessible, and efficiently managed water is likely to become increasingly valuable. Companies helping to secure that future may therefore deserve a place on every long-term investor's watchlist.
