Mood.

Mood.

There is a view that mood is something inherent only to living, sentient beings—after all, a mood (whether good or bad) is essentially a feeling of sadness or joy within the soul.

How can a flower or a tree—which lack a soul—possibly express a mood?

Practically speaking, it is impossible—unless, of course, you really dig deep into the question.

As a rule, a positive or negative mood does not simply appear out of nowhere; it requires a specific alignment of circumstances—a sort of "planetary alignment"—to come about.

For instance, a good mood has no chance of arising if we haven't slept well, or if we’ve gotten soaked and frozen in the rain.

As for people whose moods suddenly shift without any apparent reason, they are usually labeled as deranged; hence the saying: "Laughter without a reason is the sign of a fool."

Are you certain there is any reason—other than the changing of the seasons—for a plant's mood to shift? I don't think so.

Yet, a plant's mood changes at least three or four times a year; take, for example, the melancholy of autumn when the leaves begin to fall.

Then there is a different mood—one akin to impatience—when the spring sun is shining but the warmth hasn't arrived yet, and the trees stretch their branches toward it like a child reaching out for a treat from a parent.

And a sense of surprise can give rise to either a good or a bad mood—one that might be just as baffling as the mood of trees gazing at you, wondering why we humans can't figure out whether or not they experience mood swings.
