Wildlife in Macau
Macau features a surprising variety of wildlife despite its dense urban landscape. The region’s lush hills, wetlands, and coastal waters provide vital habitats for numerous species. Birdwatchers can spot over 300 bird species, including migratory waterfowl like the rare black-faced spoonbill.
The Cotai Mangrove is a key ecological zone sheltering various amphibians, reptiles, and crabs. In the surrounding waters, lucky observers might glimpse the endangered Chinese white dolphin. Land mammals are rare, but small populations of Eurasian tree sparrows, fruit bats, and various insects thrive in Macau's protected green spaces and municipal parks.
