Suggestions For Selection of Curators

in Incredible India4 days ago (edited)

Hi Dear Steemit Team,

This is in reference to my comments on your post Reference and your reply, I am taking the liberty to post my answer as a separate post.

I am sure everyone will agree with me that a community curator is someone that acts as a source between Steemit and the contributors, by rewarding them once ensuring their content fits community's voice and displays their experiences or expertise. The role of a curator is more than what looks like a routine to me, "Vote and Move." including their own posts.

Source

Community curators with “reward powers” should be trusted members who can recognize contributors while making sure their quality, fairness, and community standards are satisfactory.

If you ask me, their core responsibilities are to select the right posts and stories, so they should know their job and need to pass a test before they get this responsibility. For example, I have come across curators who do not know what they were voting for because they themselves had no idea of writing.

They should know how to check source, review, and feature high-quality content that meets values of the Steemit platform, no run-of-the-mill content, and repeated posts that start with the same routine and end with the same sentences that feel like, "Did I read this post or watch this image or video only yesterday?"

Criteria to become a curator

  1. The curator should belong to a club
  2. Minimum amount of SP according to their categories
  3. Steemit Team should conduct a test from time to time (maybe every 6 months) and the people that pass that test become eligible for applying in coming months. (I can design the test if asked for, both a simple one or a tricky one with a catch.)
  4. Not eligible for applying for one year if powered down (if not imposed a blanket ban).

Curators could be divided in 3 categories:

  • Category One- (2 Teams) each with minimum 3 members minimum rank 80 and above + minimum SP 75 K each (Teams with highest Voting Power and responsibilities)

  • Category Two- (3 Teams) with minimum 3 members with minimum rank 75 and above + minimum SP 50 K each (Teams with high Voting Power and responsibilities)

  • Category Three- (5 Teams) with minimum 3 members with minimum rank 70 Plus + minimum SP 25 K each (Teams with normal VP and responsibilities)

Note:
The same curators should not be considered for 2 consecutive months or more than 4 times in one calendar year.

I suggest these mandatory rules:

  1. Curators should work in a team of 3-4 from different countries.

  2. They MUST not vote or select a user from their own country. ✅

  3. No curator should select the same user on their next outing (I can see and give you the proof how they select the same users on every single outing with a maximum vote value.) ✅

  4. Maximum vote amount for newcomers: 10% weight until three months.

  5. Normal votes should be within the range of 30-35% to maintain uniformity, free of partiality and to cover larger number of users.

No curators for projects, but the suggestion of the project organizers should be final, as it was in the past (maximum 3-5 votes per project per day because the "Booming" votes are my main concern and cause of misappropriation).

I would like to invite experienced Community Admins for their views on my suggestions, @josevas217 @sduttaskitchen @dasudi @adeljose

Greetings friend, thank you for the mention in this post, la which is interesting to continue advancing in the changes that have been occurring and all for the improvement of our ecosystem.

I agree that clear rules should be established for selecting curators...who must have an impeccable reputation since they will be leaders and role models.

Some of your rules seem appropriate to me, however I think you should make some of them more flexible. Respecting your opinion, I would like to share my perspective on the main requirements and considerations that should be taken into account Things to consider when choosing community curators:

✓ A minimum SP of 25k, and no recent shutdown, if you do so, you must wait 6 months before you can apply for the position.

✓ Being a moderator of a community, or failing that, having had experience, as this allows you to learn a little more about how to choose a post to receive a vote. (This point seems crucial to me because, as you rightly point out, there are users who are selected for the position of curator and have no knowledge whatsoever about it).

✓ Curator teams must consist of at least three users of different nationalities. (I do not agree that only one account should be given to a single user).

These are some of the rules and suggestions that I consider key when choosing a community curator.

Thank you for accepting my invitation and sharing your priceless views. We agree on almost every point barring the one that you wish to reduce the limit from one year to 6 months in case a member powers down and wish to apply for the post of curator.

I have only given an idea along with other ideas like no member should vote and select a user from their own country therefore a team of three or more can handle this situation. I feel if accepted half the problem will be solved immediately. I also agree with your suggestion a curator should be fully conversant of all the rules including experience of moderation, etc. Thank you once again.

Saludos, amigo.

Muchas bendiciones. 🙏🏻

Hi young lady, nice to read your view points on almost every point I have mentioned in my post even if a couple of them are a bit tricky like I haven't said that f we write a diary posts our routine remains the same but as a mod I have seen same posts posted in different communities. In some cases I have seen posts with a few changed images or text etc etc.

I know not everyone does that but ... As you said a curator should remain a curator forever but you said some users with similar qualities keep on waiting so to give everyone an equal chance the rule of "No two consecutive months" seems to be the only way. However, this is just a proposal but the decision is all by Steemit Team. Thank you once again!

@dove11, I would like to begin by expressing my gratitude for including me in your discussion. I apologize for the delay in my response and hope that you do not mind.

Before I share my perspective on the topic you addressed in your post, I would like to acknowledge @steemcurator02 and the entire Steemit team for their contributions.

Having served as a community curator for over two years, I have gathered several insights that I wish to highlight through a relevant example:

Consider three individuals, designated as A, B, and C, who are friends and have all applied to be curators. A and C received nominations, while B did not. I have frequently observed a particular trend where A receives 100% of the votes and allocates 50% to C, a practice that B often emulates. When I inquired about this behavior, I received an unexpected response: “Since this individual has assisted me significantly, I always follow the same practice.”

I possess a screenshot of that conversation, but I prefer not to disclose any names. Instead, I respectfully request that the Steemit team consider including screenshots of outgoing votes in the weekly reports. This addition would enhance our understanding of which users receive seemingly arbitrary support.

Moreover, I concur with @adeljose’s assertion that many curators often neglect essential evaluation criteria. Instead, they tend to focus on reputation, frequently selecting common accounts based on visual appeal rather than the quality of the writing.

In August, when I assumed responsibility for the account of sc-07, its CSI was 17.4. By the time I transferred the account on August 29, the CSI had increased to 21.1. Each time I curated posts and comments, I ensured a thorough review was conducted prior to providing support.

I trust that the Steemit team will appreciate my perspectives.

I offer the following suggestions:

  1. Monitor SteemWorld subsequent to the transfer of accounts.
  2. Select top nominees based on quality. If one user has already been selected by a curator, consider choosing a different or previously overlooked user.
  3. Frequently, sources producing high-quality writing are not nominated. However, when the source is appropriately credited and the writing is exceptional, such posts should be designated for recognition.
  4. Being from India does not imply that I will exclusively support individuals from my country. This platform should be utilised to assist those who genuinely need support for their survival.

Thank you for considering my insights.

Thank you for adding value to what I wanted to say. As a hobby I keep a track of steemworld of various curation accounts and what I see disappoints me. I have refused to be a team member with certain users because I don't want to be part of give and take or should I say , "you scratch my back I do yours."

I see this job as community service and not an earning job because what I do on this site is my passion and not a way of earning. Besides ethics are important for me and when I see people going against them, I simply withdraw.

By the way I am comparatively new on this site as I joined barely four years ago and working as a curator for almost three years but never did anything in my personal interest. I hope you know what I mean, thank you once again.

You have shared many suggestions from your point of view, and I think several of them are positive. However, I feel there should be some flexibility in a few areas. Everyone here wants to grow, and I think that should be appreciated. The rules can be strict and positive at the same time, but we should also be careful not to make them too strict.

I agree with you that curators should change from time to time. I also think the curator selection rules should be reviewed and adjusted occasionally, just as we are seeing some changes now. This can give more users a chance to become curators and bring new perspectives to the teams.

However, I think a 10% vote limit for newcomers is a little too low. New users can be more sensitive in the beginning, and if they do not receive enough support at the start, there is a chance they may become demotivated. Newcomers are already unlikely to receive large votes unless their posts are really good. Also, with the current low price of STEEM, reducing their vote even further may not be the best solution.

I also have a different opinion about the three curator categories. If the requirements are set at such high levels, I think the same small group of users may get the opportunity to curate repeatedly. Users with around 10–15K SP and 70+ reputation should also have a chance. This could help us discover good curators among newer or less experienced users, while also giving them an opportunity to grow their reputation.

Regarding the one-year waiting period after powering down, I feel that one year is quite a long time. Sometimes people may need to power down because of an emergency or an unexpected situation. If they later return and meet the other requirements, I think they should be allowed to apply again after a reasonable waiting period rather than being excluded for a full year.

I would also like to understand the reasoning behind the rule that curators must not vote for or select users from their own country.

In my opinion, a curator can sometimes understand their own country's users and content better. They may know the local language, culture, and community, and they may also have a better idea about which users are genuinely active and which accounts may not be genuine. An outside curator may not always have that same understanding. Language can also be a factor. Of course, we can use translation tools, but translations are not always completely accurate, especially when someone is expressing personal experiences or using local expressions.

Instead of completely preventing curators from selecting users from their own country, perhaps there could be a balanced rule. For example, if a curator can select three posts per week, they could be allowed to select only one post from their own country and the other two from different countries. Or, even better, the three selected posts could come from three different countries.

I think this could maintain fairness and diversity while still allowing curators to use their knowledge of their own local community.

These are just my thoughts. I believe the best system would be one that maintains fairness and accountability while still giving more users a reasonable opportunity to grow.

Useful points regarding curators voting for people from their own country.

I am willing to know how many posts in regional languages are selected or even voted upon barring Malay and Spanish? Maybe a couple of posts in Bengali, Ukraine and Russian most of which were selected by me.

Thank you @dove11 for tagging me and highlighting your post. It is an interesting topic and I see that there are already many opinions and discussions taken place in regards of selection criteria for Curators. It is always a difficult choice to make decision who to select for Steemit Team, there will be always people who will be happy and other who will be upset not to be among Curators.

Looking through your criteria, there area some reasonable points:

  • importance of regular Powering Up not necessarily on monthly basis it may depend of circumstances of Users

  • Reputation of 70+, I actually will not pay much attention to that because if the users get relatively regular support from SC03-09 or booming upvote and occasionally from SC01-02 then reputation is build up very quickly I noticed that on new accounts and it does not reflect of their engagement

  • The activity of users in commenting and engaging would be more important for selection process, there are few curators who are engaging in further communication even after they supported users and that motivates users more to follow an example

  • in regards of Steem Power, yes, it is important to have certain amount of Steem Power but you know yourself it is difficult to accumulate it and all of us who are actively commenting here had been on Steemit Platform for long time, we almost grown up with new Steemit Team and its rules. That is why we see the same names, higher Steem Power and we see the same names again and again among curator Teams

  • as to the rules not to vote of users from own country, it is almost not possible for some countries. We all know that the majority of users are from Venezuela. They are very active, they became perfect in their posting, the quality of content and photography. They are also very good commenting and supporting users, that is fact. Alongside with Venezuela there are many other users from other countries whoa re also active and being a curator from the same country it should not be stopped them to vote on users from own country

  • Smaller communities and fewer users from other countries, that is the weak point of Curators, there were many communities before but slowly many dried up and not much activities happening because there is not much support there. There are also users who do not post in any community and just do post own content using some tags. Some of users are interesting personalities and could be good company but they are not discovered and not supported. Those users will remain small and inactive. Those users maybe need to be visited, engaged by Curators. You know when we receive a BIG vote we are motivated and would like to find our what we should do to continue being visible.

  • Agree, that same users should not be selected on more than two consecutive months and four times a year. We have so many experienced users who can do fair curation, so please give chance for others and creates nice variety rather than going on easy way and selecting same users because we just know that they are good

Thank you for opportunity to share my view and for your great suggestion post!

Thank you so much for your support and opinion! Dear doctor @stef1 Seems like you haven't noticed that Venezuelans have long gone behind Bangladeshi users but yes, I appreciate there activities including the way they comment and support each other. That keeps a post alive and that's the basic of SEO.

As far rep 70, now it's free for all, I mean one should have 10k SP in his account and they are good to go as curators in a team or even solo. In fact, the site is making new experiments and my post is part of that experiment even if I am going through lot of grilling 😄

All said and done, I still remember the time when I first joined a team under your leadership and learned a few lessons which I feel will remain benchmark for me but no more practical in today's reference.

As far my disappointment, no I am not because I don't team up with everyone but I have my choice of members. i will not go into the rules with you because you're the one I respect for your ethics, so there...

Thanks once again for your support!

Oh... that is interesting is it really that number of Bangladeshi users are higher? I definitely missed that. It is good that there are many people from any country the point often there are many curators from one country where the majority of users are therefore, it is physically not possible not to choose them. I think quality and support of the active and engaged users but also not in excess.

You have your principles that you developed for you and that is great, my respect and appreciation!

If you check the way things are going on, you will know everything for yourself. I can only say the things are entirely different they used to be when you were active in main stream. Thanks again.

I believe everyone here has raised some important points. In my view, the selection of curators should prioritize fairness, transparency, and the ability to recognize quality content.

Overly strict rules may not always yield the best results. Instead, there should be clear guidelines designed to minimize bias, repeated voting for the same users, and conflicts of interest.

I think that rotating curators regularly and ensuring accountability would create opportunities for new people and bring diversity to the curation process.

Ultimately, the goal should be to enhance the quality and credibility of curation while ensuring fair opportunities for deserving users.
