The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 22, Post #5

in #hebrew • last month

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Exodus 22:27-30

We are finishing another chapter in the Torah today. The actual scrolls never had chapter and verse numbers so this is something that was added. The list of commandments and statutes is continuing right through the chapter numbers. Still, it is nice to be able to say where you are reading by just mentioning Exodus 22:27 and anyone can find your place.

We start with the prohibition of teka-lell (declaring to be cursed) your Elohim (God).

You shall not tah-or (curse) the leader among your people. This one is clearly a different word from the one related to Elohim. The only letter in common is the Tav - and that letter means "you" (plural) in both cases. FYI.

You shall not curse your juice by giving of the fullness hesitatingly. I know this principal personally. He wants us to acknowledge Him as the provider as we give the first and the best of our increase.

You shall give your firstborn to me. Do the same with your oxen and sheep. Speaking of the sheep, "It shall remain with the mother for seven days then it is mine."

Men of holiness you shall be to me.

You shall not eat what is torn by an animal. In other words, road kill is off limits. Give it to the dogs if you want, but you cannot eat it. That sounds like a healthy rule.

I know I have read about the first born before, along with the rule of redemption. But today's passage does not say how we are to give our first born to Elohim. Abraham, and his trip up the mountain with Yeets-chahk (Isaac), carrying all that wood came to mind. More on that here and here. But I know we are not supposed to sacrifice our children.

Counting the rules past 'ten'.
Our General list is up to 54.
And our Strict list is at 125.

Today's Reading

English

"You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people."

"You shall not delay to offer from the fullness of your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to me. You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me."

"You shall be consecrated to me. Therefore you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs."
