Own harvest of potatoes

Hello my dear Steemians,

 

In my opinion when someone has land, garden no matter small or large, we should use the opportunity and plant something. Some people love flowers and their gardens look like parks but other use garden to produce own vegetables of fruits.

We decided to try to do simple and planted some vegetables and I wanted to share it today, we are now planting for the last 3 years and enjoying own vegetables.

Everyone who love gardening will know that we always have a fight with weed and that is one of the hard part therefore, we decided to plant in raising beds that we built ourselves.

 

Our garden

 

So, let’s come to our garden and we will start with potatoes.

 

Planting potatoes
 

For planting potatoes we chosen early spring, usually in March when it is becoming warmer and when we think that there is no more cold days. We have prepared the raised beds, filled with freshly bought soil, that was already rich in minerals and nutrients, we also used fertilizer before planting our potatoes, I used potatoes and cut into quarters and placed into the soil.

 

 

 

 

The good thing about potatoes they grow very quickly and look juicy and healthy, we have had great harvest and picked them up in late August, it is said that harvest should be collected once the green leaves become dry, on other hand our potatoes started to come to the surface and understandably we picked them up.

 

 

Planting garlic

 

 

Couple of years ago I heard from my colleague that he planted garlic and it grown very easily here in Scotland with our cold weather. I love cooking with garlic therefore, immediately decided to do it. While reading the gardening blogs we found the best time is Autumn, in October or November so that over winter garlic becomes stronger and even the first green stems will come through in winter and that is normal.

We took 28 cloves of garlic and after preparing our raised bed have planted them in 5cm depth and 15cm between them.

 

 

In July this year we have collected our garlic, because again, once the leaves started to dry we decided to pick them up and here how much harvest we have.

 

 

Here how our garlic plant is looking when we started to pull them out and we were very happy t see that they look healthy and relatively big

 

 

In order to store garlic better we also checked in gardening blogs and found that the best and also place consuming is to braid them together but after drying them leaves so a week later I come back to work to braid my garlic.

 

 

I have cleaned the garlic from very dry skin and leaves and them started to sort out bigger first so that we have nice tight beginning of plait and here some steps of them.

 

 

 

Here how it is looking like when braiding is coming up nicely. Our braided garlic is now on the wall and I am pretty sure we are safe from vampires :)

 

 

Own carrots

 
We also planting some carrots , it was just small amount just for test but we were surprised that there were plenty of carrots too, that I have given some to my colleagues, so that they can be eaten or cooked so long they are fresh.

 

 
I was curious about the taste and here it is cut carrot and it taste good fresh, juicy and sweet.

 

 

I love my garden and we spend a lot of time in garden, it is enjoyable that if you give much love and care to mother Earth, you will be rewarded for that and we definitely benefit from it, despite of having all the vegetables in supermarkets and the prices are relatively affordable we love to have own vegetables.
